Difference between iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S

Key Difference: The iPhone 6 was announced in September 2014 and is the newest phone in the Apple iPhone series after the iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. The iPhone 6 has a bigger screen, rounded edges, and newer hardware.

No one can deny that the iPhone is one of the dominant players in the phone market. It controls a huge market share of the industry. The iPhone is now on its sixth generation. The iPhone 6 immediately follows the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C. However, the iPhone 6 is considered a direct successor of the iPhone 5S.

The first thing that the new iPhone builds up on is the screen size. The iPhone 6 flaunts a 4.7 inch screen which is the biggest screen to be seen on an iPhone yet. However, the larger iPhone 6 screen has the same resolution as the iPhone 5S, i.e. 326 pixels per inch. Furthermore, the iPhone 5S had Corning Gorilla Glass with oleophobic coating, whereas the iPhone 6 officially just has a shatter proof ion-strengthened glass with oleophobic coating.

Also, the iPhone 6 has curved edges on the body frame, which differs from the iPhone 5S’s straight angular edges. The iPhone 6 continues to have the aluminium backing and toughened glass fronts which was introduced with the iPhone 5. This aims to reduce the problem of shattered backs as seen in the iPhone 4. Additionally, the iPhone 6 is slimmer than the iPhone 5S. Further changes in the body include the move of the power button from the top of the phone to the side. This has been done to make it easier to reach on the larger body.

In terms of hardware the new iPhone 6 debuts the A8 – 64bit architecture, as compared to the A7 64-bit architecture in the iPhone 5S. Apple claims that this will improve graphics and CPU performance by 50% and 20% respectively. The iPhone 6 has the PowerVR GX6650 GPU, whereas the iPhone 5S has PowerVR G6430 GPU. However, both have 1 GB RAM. The iPhone 6 will also come with new M8 motion coprocessor, which like the M7 is primarily aimed at fitness applications and can now distinguish between running, cycling and elevation.

Both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S has an 8-megapixel camera, with an f / 2.2 lens and sensor pixels 1.5 microns a piece; but the iPhone 6 has a protruding camera lens from the back which may be an issue for scratching. The iPhone 6 also features phase detection autofocus which was seen in the Samsung Galaxy S5. The iPhone 6 offers a software called ‘Digital Image Stabilisation’ (DIS) which minimises camera shake that causes blurred shots. Its front facing FaceTime Camera is 1.2 megapixales which takes in 81% more light, gain HDR, improved face detection and a burst mode for better selfies. The phone also offers 1080p video recording at 30fps and 60fps (frames per second) as well as 120-240fps in slo-mo.

In terms of software, both have the TouchID sensor; however, the iPhone 6 offers Apple Pay which allows the consumer to pay over NFC technology. Nevertheless, the HFC technology which is introduced on an iPhone for the first time will be limited to Apple Pay.

Also the iPhone comes is variants of 16 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB, getting rid of the 32 GB available in previous models. The phone also has a bigger battery as compared to the previous range. The iPhone 6 touts a 1810 mAh battery, as compared to a 1440 mAh battery of the iPhone 5S.
