Difference between Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence
Key Difference: Intelligence is the quality of being intelligent. It is the quality of a being to be well-informed and smart. Artificial intelligence, on the other hand, are computers that can be well trained to think like humans do.
According to Dictionary.com, ‘Intelligence’ is:
- Capacity for learning, reasoning, understanding, and similar forms of mental activity; aptitude in grasping truths, relationships, facts, meanings, etc.
- Manifestation of a high mental capacity.
- The faculty of understanding.
- Knowledge of an event, circumstance, etc., received or imparted; news; information.
- The gathering or distribution of information, especially secret information.
Intelligence is what one can improve by studies, reasoning, understanding, and learning. It is most widely studied in humans, but animals and plants also have intelligence. Plants, though they are non-living, understand everything. Intelligence is derived from the Latin word intelligere which means ‘to pick up’.
As a basic term, intelligence is a high capacity of learning or understanding a particular term. It can only be developed from childhood. No one is born intelligent, one needs to work on it and improve his skills.

The term Artificial Intelligence was coined in 1956 by John McCarthy. Artificial intelligence is a computer machine that develops a human quality. They mimic and perform same as humans. These computers had arrived 50 years back and the scientists or the researchers had worked a lot on the human minds. Modern day applications like speech recognition, robots playing chess, table tennis and playing music have been making the dream of these researchers true.
The focus of artificial intelligence is to design machines that can mimic or act as humans. Artificial intelligence allows computers to learn from experience, recognize patterns in large amounts of complex data and make decisions based on human knowledge and reasoning skills.
One of the examples of artificial intelligence is a Robot. They sometimes seems to be amazingly intelligent than humans but they are capable only of very limited tasks. Robots have great difficulty identifying objects based on appearance or feel, and they still move and handle objects awkwardly.
Chess is a very intellectual game. It is a perfect game in which one can test artificial intelligence techniques. It is a program that has been fitted in the computer. In chess, if you are playing chess on the computer, the player who is playing on the other side, is artificial intelligence that is performing as a human. It is a controlled environment in which the goals are already presented in the computer. It will have more techniques and will try to manipulate all the steps more quickly and rapidly. In May, 1997, a super-computer called Deep Blue defeated world chess champion Gary Kasparov in a chess match.
Currently, no artificial intelligence computers are available than chess computers. Basically, artificial intelligence is a broad field of study.
Intelligence is the capability of a person to learn and understand anything. Intelligence is those who are clever and quick in understanding. On the other hand, artificial intelligence systems are built around programmed inference machines.
