Difference between Probation Period and Training Period

Key Difference: Probation Period refers to assessment period of closely evaluating the work of new employee in the company or business whereas Training period refers to the period in which the employees are provided information, set of new skills or for providing the opportunities to employees to professionally develop and grow.

Probation Period refers to assessment period of closely evaluating the work of new employee in the company or business whereas training period refers to the period in which the employees are provided with important information, set of new skills or with opportunities to professionally develop and grow. Probation period is associated with the new employees whereas training period is associated with both – new and existing employees.

Probation refers to status of a new employee of a company or business. Probation is the beginning step for the employment life cycle marked by probation period. Recruitments in the offices are done to hire new talents as well as to hire experienced professionals. The company generally recruits the employee after interviewing and checking his credentials. If the candidate is selected than he is asked to join the company. Initially the candidate has to serve probation period.

 Probation is also known as assessment period as it gives the chance to management and employee to assess each other and if things go well then they can be asset to each other. The time in which the employee is kept at probation is also known as probation period. This probation period may vary from company to company, but it usually lasts for 3-6 months. The company at the probation period of the employee views that whether this new employee is able to cope up with the requirements of the job or not. If company finds things to be satisfactory and find the employee to be suitable for the job, company confirms the job of the employee and he gets the benefits of confirmed employee; and is known as confirmation. Training can be of two types. On the job training involves training within the everyday work of a concern while in off the job training the training is provided away from the actual working conditions.

Benefits of training period are:

  1. A well trained employee needs less supervision.
  2. Learning latest skills can improve chances of promotion.
  3. Overall productivity increases.
  4. Less errors in work
  5. Updated information.

Benefits of probation period include:

  1. New employee gets familiarized with the work culture.
  2. Company can assess the work of new employee.
  3. Only suitable candidates get confirmed.
  4. Easy termination of a new employee on the basis of evaluation.

Training usually occurs after orientation. Training Period is focused to enhance the quality of work of employees. In probation period the employee must take care of things like taking few leaves, no delay in work, follow all guidelines of the office etc. During training period the employees must try to grasp as much as possible and enhance their sills and potential to work.
