Difference between Cartoon and Anime

Key Difference: A cartoon is simply a two-dimensional visual art. Originally the term was used in the Middle East to refer to a preparatory drawing for a piece of art, such as a painting, fresco, tapestry, or stained glass window. Anime is Japanese animation in simple terms. These can be hand-drawn or computer animated. Originally, many of these animations were hand drawn, but with the increasing use of technologies these are now commonly made using computers.

Cartoon and anime have been the subject of multiple debates since anime became popular in the western countries. Many people state that there is no difference between anime and cartoon, while others state these are completely two different categories. This is a very delicate topic as there is no official demarcation where cartoon ends and anime begins. Hence, these lines are blurred and crossed over multiple times. Anime is actually a type of cartoon, but in today’s world it has stepped away from this title and has created its own category in animation.

A cartoon is simply a two-dimensional visual art. Originally the term was used in the Middle East to refer to a preparatory drawing for a piece of art, such as a painting, fresco, tapestry, or stained glass window. These days cartoons are non-realistic or semi-realistic drawing or painting that is intended for satire, caricature or humor. Cartoon can also be used to refer to the one or three-panel strips that are found in newspapers and magazines. Many cartoons these days have become associated with children and have also been designed with similar plot lines that are acceptable for kids. Many cartoons cover the concept of good vs. evil or have morals at the end of the stories in order to teach kids certain values.

The term ‘cartoon’ has been derived from Italian ‘cartone’ and Dutch word “karton” meaning “strong, heavy paper or pasteboard.” These was used to describe a full-size drawing that was made on paper or a sturdy cardboard that was used as a model for the painting, stained glass or other art forms. Cartoons then transitioned to print media where cartoonists would draw realistic or semi-realistic images to describe funny situations that happen around us. Cartoons can be found in print or in animated form.

Anime is Japanese animation in simple terms. These can be hand-drawn or computer animated. Originally, many of these animations were hand drawn, but with the increasing use of technologies these are now commonly made using computers. Anime includes animated television series, comics, short films and full-length feature films. The word ‘anime’ has been derived from ‘animation’. Anime are often associated with colorful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastic themes.

The earliest Japanese animation can be dated back to 1917 but became famous outside of Japan in the 1980s. Anime is targeted towards more teen to adult audience, where the story lines have a more mature theme. However, with the increasing popularity, many anime are also being developed for children. Anime characters are drawn to more realistic proportions, but new anime have placed a more emphasis on the eyes and have made them bigger. Anime themes are also considered more violent and cover many different types of topics that are not suitable for children.

The major difference between cartoon and anime in today’s world lies in that cartoons have become associated with children, while anime is considered more suitable for adults. Cartoons also have unrealistic scenarios and characters such as a talking mouse, while anime are situated more towards realistic but may also incorporate magic and other such things. However, again this depends on the creator of the show and is not used as an appropriate classification. The lines between both of these have been created by many lovers out there so suggesting that anime is a type of cartoon has become a strict no-no among these people.
