Shakes are different from juices and smoothies as they are made with a dairy base which happens to be milk or ice-cream usually. It is also usually flavored or sweetened with different items like fruit syrup and chocolate sauce. They are generally topped with whipped cream and candy toppings.

The original milkshake was like eggnog made from eggs, whiskey and a dairy base. Over the years, they have been evolved.
