Difference between Chose and Choose

Key Difference: When we choose something, it basically means that after a period of consideration we have taken a decision to select one thing out of a variety of options. The actions that are being done are in present tense, they are happening now. Now the word “Chose” differs only in the sense that they have already happened. It is the past tense of choose.

The terms “Choose” and “Chose” create a lot of confusion when it comes to spelling it for a lot of people as the only difference between the spellings of the two words is an extra “o”. Many word processing programs such as MS Word do not pick up it up as a mistake as both of these are actual words. These two words also have the same meaning, but the only difference is the time period.

Merriam Webster defines the word ‘choose’ as, “to select freely and after consideration; to decide on especially by vote; elect; to have a preference.” When we choose something, it basically means that after a period of consideration we have taken a decision to select one thing out of a variety of options available. For example, I choose the red Ferrari.” The actions that are being done are in present tense, they are happening now.

Now the word “Chose” differs only in the sense that they have already happened. It has already taken place and now you are just talking or saying it. For example, “I chose the red Ferrari.” This means that the person has already purchased the car and made their choice and is now telling someone about it. Webster defines ‘chose’ as “past of choose.” This term is synonymous with words likes selected, picked out, preferred, etc. Notice how they all are in the past tense.
