Difference between Wig and Weave

Key Difference: A wig is hair covering made from human hair, animal hair, or synthetic fiber. It is often worn for fashion or other reasons, including cultural tradition and religious observance. The weave is a form of hair extension. While a wig is used to cover the hair completely, hair extensions are used to add length and volume to the hair.

When it comes to hair, there are many hairstyles that come in style and just as quickly go out of style. However, at times there are certain things that last for generation, even if their popularity keeps changing. A wig and weave are two such things. Some use them for fashion, while some use them out of necessarily. However, one thing is certain that they are two different things, even if it may be difficult at time to differentiate between them.

A wig is hair covering made from human hair, animal hair, or synthetic fiber. It is often worn for fashion or other reasons, including cultural tradition and religious observance. The term wig is short for periwig, which first appeared in the English language around 1675. However, the wig itself dates back to Ancient Egypt. The ancient Egyptians wore wigs to shield their shaved, hairless heads from the sun. The Assyrians, Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans, also commonly used wigs as an everyday fashion.

The wigs can be used for fashion, or to cover up baldness. This baldness could be natural; a side effect of a medical treatment, such as chemotherapy; or it could be self-inflicted due to religious to cultural traditions. A wig is quite popular for these uses as it is much cheaper and less intrusive than other form of hair replacement, such as medical therapies for restoring hair or weaves.

The weave is a form of hair extension. While a wig is used to cover the hair completely, hair extensions are used to add length and volume to the hair. The extensions are often made from artificial hair or natural hair collect from others. In a weave, the hair extensions are woven and/or bonded with the natural hair. These hair techniques are advanced and are used to change the hair drastically without looking unrealistic.

The weave is often used mainly for aesthetic appeal and fashion. As compared to wigs, a wave is more expensive and longer lasting. It also requires more care. A wig can be put on and taken off after as long a period as required. A weave usually requires training and advanced technology to put it. Depending on the weave, it may last from a few weeks to a few months. However, during that time, the weave will require treatment and care, in order to last longer and look good. Some types of weave do not even allow one to wash their hair.
