Difference between Like and Share Button on Facebook

Key difference: The Facebook ‘Like’ and ‘Share’ are the most popularly used buttons on many websites. The key difference between the two buttons is that the ‘Like’ button is used for appreciating another person’s link, status or a post on the same person’s page, whereas the ‘Share’ button is used to share or distribute any liked posts, links, videos, pages or updates with everyone in an individual’s friends list on their respective Facebook pages.

Ever since the invention of Facebook, people have found it very hard to ignore and stay away from the site. So much, that even after decade of its use, people are still hooked and logged in to their accounts. And, its popularity simply keeps on increasing. So, why is Facebook so addicting? Well, the one main reason is social networking. It is a wise and widely used online portal for meeting old and new friends, talking about likes and dislikes, discovering new things and reminiscing about forgotten things, etc. i.e. socializing.

Another reason would be that Facebook allows its users to post their thoughts, favorite videos and links, pictures, on their said pages or account. And, began the trouble, wherein people started liking sharing and commenting on their friends every post, links, videos, pictures, etc. Thus, giving immense fame and popularity to the ‘Like’ and ‘Share’ buttons around the globe, so much that, there is no website, individual blogs, or any other site created without the two, ‘Like’ and ‘Share’ buttons on the side.

The ‘Like button’ on the Facebook page basically allows a person to appreciate another person’s posts, thoughts, links, videos, etc on their page. It also allows the person to share the same liked activity to their timeline or news-feed in just one click. It is considered as a simple, easy and fun activity by the users i.e. while browsing through ones page, he or she can just click ‘Like’ on a post, and have your thoughts shared without even saying a word. It is a good way to add feedback to content, and then sharing the same on his or her page by a single-click-operation.

The ‘Share button’, on the other hand, allows the users to share other people’s content on their page, and by simply adding a written text to the chosen content. It allows the user to write something about the link, and the audience he or she wants to post it too. This feature is considered a bit more advanced because it gives the user an option to explain why they have shared the item. This commented item is then displayed on the user’s wall as well as his or her friend’s page on their list. Though, one can choose to set their privacy options.

It can be said that, while the ‘Like’ feature creates a one-line story, a ‘Share’ may include remarks or a picture for that story. In simple terms, liking is considered easier than sharing, because people don’t like commenting at every liked item. But, sharing along with a positive comment adds to the potential value of the said item.
