Difference between Data Entry Operator and Computer Operator

Key Difference:  A data entry operator inputs the data in a computer system in a quick and efficient manner. A computer operator is assigned the task of monitoring and controlling the computers used in the organization or company.

A data entry operator has the responsibility to input data in a computer system whereas  computer operator is assigned the task of monitoring and controlling the computers used in the organization or company. Today most of the work from manual systems has been shifted to automated systems. This involves extensive use of computers. Computers are used for processing of data. This digitalization has paved path for many types of jobs. Data entry operator and computer operator are also jobs involving the role of computers.

A data entry operator may use a keyboard, optical scanner or data recorder to input the data. A data entry operator must possess good knowledge of numbers, letters and formats. He should not commit mistakes while typing, as a little mistake committed by the operator can turn out to be a serious problem, if not corrected on time. Therefore, data entry operator must check the data after entering it, for the purpose of verifying the work done. The operator must be quick and efficient in the work. The job is considered as entry level and therefore most of the recruiters require High school as a minimum qualification. Many companies use their clerical staff to carry out data entry related tasks. A data entry operator must type accurately and a good typing speed is always preferred.  It is also offered as part-time job in some companies for cost-cutting.

 

A computer operator manages the computer system in an organization. He is responsible to maintain computer systems. His responsibilities include solving software and hardware related problems, to carry out necessary steps to improve performance of computer systems, maintaining online availability, assisting employees facing trouble with computer system and to maintain documents related to systems and applications. This is a more technical job than compared to data entry operator and hence, formal technical training is preferred. A computer operator should be able to understand problems faced by other employees and should be able to solve their system related problems. A computer operator may also be asked to take system backups, maintain printers etc. They mainly used to work on mainframe computers earlier but now they work more on networked personal computers. A computer operator needs to work as a team to operate and maintain computers. They also provide assistance via e-mail or phone in addition to in-person. Some key differences are listed here-
